My setup for using this product: Macbook Pro 17" the last model with a 23" Apple Cinema Display. This adapter runs at the native resolution for the cinema display. It'll do it's job in that you get a second screen and it looks ok, but only ok. It's a very low quality video card. If you are going to rely on this for color-critical or detail work, or for any sort of gaming, find another solution. It performed poorly and seemed to introduce significant video lag while I was working on a multitrack audio project in Logic Pro X.

I've worked on calibrated screens most of my creative career, so I know what a good screen looks like. It's color rendition is horrible. It's color gamut is off enough to make all your colors look bright and garish. The gamma is so bad that it rendered OSX's dock as nearly white. I don't think a colorimeter calibration would help it much either. Maybe some.

It doesn't even render text well.

I'd go nuts and probably just get fatigued having to stare into that bad screen all day. If you produce creative content, don't buy this. If you need something to run a public kiosk or for some other utilitarian task, go for it. If you're scrimping by until you can get something better like me , maybe figure out another solution and weigh your costs. I took a gamble on it and it'll get me by until I can figure something else out. So Meh. I'm returning this, I decided it's not worth the money to get me by, it's essentially useless.

I use my laptop as my desktop and have wanted for some time to have 2 solid displays at least on it. For a while I ran with a 23" panel and the lid of my MBP open which worked good, but as I'm getting older and the eyesight is getting shaky, I really wanted a 2nd 23" display.

Unfortunately, on the Macbook, you've only got the one display port to do stuff with, and such began my quest for "how the heck do I get a second display on this thing". I have to say the results are pretty nice for what I was looking for. You're probably not going to want to watch video or game on this in fact, I'm pretty sure if you read the tech specs you'll see that they say that , but even if you do say start a video on this display, its not terrible, just a little choppy still kinda watchable.

Its fine for reading documents, coding, surfing the web again maybe just avoid video etc. I just received it for the purpose of using it with the new 12 inch Macbook with the USB-C interface. I went into the StarTech website and downloaded the newest beta driver for Yosemite.
